“Can’t See the Point”: PlayStation Creator Dismisses Zuckerberg’s Metaverse

The inventor of the PlayStation gaming console has criticised Mark Zuckerberg’s new venture, the so-called ‘Metaverse’.

Speaking to Bloomberg on Thursday, Ken Kutaragi, a former Sony executive often referred to as the ‘Father of the PlayStation’, said that the Metaverse’s future in the tech industry would be blighted by its reliance on “annoying” virtual reality headgear that “isolates [users] from the real world.”

“Being in the real world is very important, but the metaverse is about making quasi-real in the virtual world, and I can’t see the point of doing it. You would rather be a polished avatar instead of your real self? That’s essentially no different from anonymous message board sites.”

The 71-year-old, who spearheaded Sony’s entry into the gaming business in 1993, instead argued that companies should strive to combine the digital and real worlds together, noting it had been his “life’s mission” to decrease the requirement for intrusive gadgets. Instead, he told Bloomberg that he hopes to use tech including robots to recreate meeting places in the real world that would allow people to socialise remotely without needing headgear.
